Cal-Bay exhibits new defense instrument for signal interference

Cal-Bay Systems, a leading company that provides test systems, as well as test and measurement solutions, has debuted its Spectrum DefenderTM — a next-gen instrument that combines the power of spectrum monitoring and RF recording into one portable, off-the-shelf PXI-based platform.

Designed to prevent cheap, unlicensed devices from infringing mission-critical and application-dependent VHF, UHF and microwave bands, Spectrum DefenderTM provides engineers with efficient means to monitor, analyze, troubleshoot and defend their spectrum and system performance from disruptions brought by these stray or hostile signals.

This new instrument from Cal-Bay Systems also feature survey, record, play and review functions, with choices of standard, built-to-order of custom workflow configurations depending on the user’s needs. An “autonomous” mode removes the need for continuous live monitoring by automatically recognizing and recording signal encroachment for further analysis.

As a result of NSSLGlobal Ltd.’s, an independent service provider of satellite communications, goal to support key clients at a regional level, the company opened last April 15, 2013 its new office in the Asian hub of Singapore.

NSSLGlobal’s recent move only adopts to its growing market in the past few years. “As our first office in the Far East, it’s an important step in the progression of NSSLGlobal. With a good infrastructure and easy access to the surrounding regions, the opening of our new Singapore office provides the perfect base to support our growing Asia Pacific customers, who require a company to manage their account within their own time zone,” said NSSLGlobal CEO, Sally-Anne Ray. “We see this as another step in our commitment to invest time and money in the market.”

Appointed as the local General Manager for Singapore is Priya Patel, who has been with NSSLGlobal since 2000. “It’s an exciting move and one I’m personally relishing to begin. I see this as a highly beneficial and important addition to our 24/7 technical support, as we will be able to provide service and IT support on the ground,” said Patel.

An office in Cornwall, United Kingdon, has already been opened just recently which marks NSSLGlobal’s continuos efforts for expansion.

STMicroelectronics’ satellite-tracking chip thrives in Galileo System Test

STMicroelectronics, a leading manufacturer of semiconductors, reported that its Teseo Ii single-chip satellite-tracking ICs did very well during the first ground location test of Galileo — Europe’s independent navigation system.

The European Space Agency (ESA) administered the tests at their Netherlands technology center, while STMicroelectronics coordinated with the agency from its Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) software development labs in Italy.

As a single-chip standalone satellite receiver capable of using signals from all other satellite navigation systems, the Teseo II delivers shorter time-to-first-fix and continuous tracking with better accuracy.

ST and ESA made use of a rooftop antenna with a clear view of the satellites (static) and a mobile test-bed unit travelling in a normal user environment (dynamic) to administer the Galileo system test. Using only four of the Galileo IOV satellites, the Teseo II receiver was able to track and produce a 3D fix over the entire path of the mobile unit.

Ball Aerospace & Technologies, a leading manufacturer of spacecraft, components, and instruments for national defense, civil space and commercial space applications, has now begun with the integration for WorldView-3, DigitalGlobe’s second-generation commercial remote-sensing satellite. WorldView-3 is the third in a series to employ the Ball Commercial Platform (BCP) 5000, and is scheduled for launch middle of 2014.

In anticipation of the delivery of ITT Exelis imaging sensor, the incorporation of WorldView-3’s control moment gyroscopes (CMGs) and propulsion module is ongoing. The environmental testing of the satellite will begin this fall once sensor integration and checkout are accomplished.

DigitalGlobe’s WorldView-3 will provide 31-centimeter resolution panchromatic, 1.24-meter resolution eight-band multispectral, and 3.72 meter resolution eight-band Short Wave Infrared (SWIR) imagery. The CMGs of the satellite can reorient it over a favored collection area in four to five seconds, unlike the thirty to forty-five seconds required for traditional reaction wheels.

Ericsson introduces AVP4000 compression platform to deliver TV services

Mobile telecommunications company Ericsson debuted its new high-performance compression platform to provide TV services across all networks. Powered by the company’s first in-house developed programmable video processing chip, the AVP 4000 is a single platform that caters to different applications — regardless of its codec, network or resolution.

Ericsson’s next-generation compression platform guarantees ease of integration, expansion, re-purposing, training, repair and upgrades because it address all application, codecs, resolutions and profiles. As a result, it reduces the overall cost of ownership, thanks to the new video processing chip of the company.

In a company statement, Ericsson TV Compression Business Head Giles Wilson noted: “This programmable chip gives us the performance and the control necessary to develop and implement the algorithms required to achieve the highest bandwidth efficiency across all delivery networks.”

Telus, a Canadian telecommunications company, is now testing Ericsson’s AVP 4000 for a future TV platform, with high-quality and services.

The global communications and information company, MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd, signed a CA$81 million contract with the Canadian Space Agency to provide the sustaining engineering and operational support for its robotic elements on the International Space Station (ISS) through December 2015.

In a statement, MDA claimed their robotic systems played a critical role in the construction of the Space Station. With construction of the station complete, robotics continue to play a vital role in on-going operations—from berthing visiting vehicles such as the SpaceX Dragon and Japanese HTV spacecraft to performing ground-breaking technology demonstrations.

Don Osborne, MDA Vice-President, said “We have a long history of supporting human spaceflight activities and are committed to providing critical capabilities to meet the future needs of the ISS.”

MDA is the prime contractor to the Canadian Space Agency for the Mobile Servicing System, which consists of Canadarm2, Dextre, and the Mobile Base System. From inception to operation, MDA’s innovative solutions have demonstrated flexibility and utility in building and maintaining the ISS.

SAT introduces updated version of satID solution

National security solutions provider Kratos Defense announced that its subsidiary, SAT Corporation, now offers an updated version of satID, the company’s RF Interference (RFI) Geolocation product.

satID aims to be an all-in-one solution for locating identifying sources of interference caused by failure of equipment, intentional jamming, operator error or unauthorized users. The updated version of satID aims to deliver a more intuitive and streamlined user experience, resulting in an improved, highly flexible architecture that can scale to fit all types of customer installation.

The 3.0 version of satID is equipped with a new map-driver user interface designed to deliver an enhanced way of generating geolocation results. Some of the other major adjustments include streamlined data input and extensive data entry integration with SAT’s Monics carrier monitoring solution.

“Over 15 years of customer feedback and product development has led to the advanced features in satID 3.0, making it the most powerful and intuitive geolocation solution available,” said Bob Potter, President of SAT. “SAT offers the most comprehensive and advanced suite of RF Interference mitigation solutions available to provide an end-to-end solution for RFI mitigation.”

Exhibitors, movie studios collaborate to bring satellite-based digital delivery to theaters

Three of the biggest exhibitors in the U.S and five American film studios recently signed a deal to partner on the first ever digital theatrical delivery service via satellite. AMC, Cinemark and Regal, together with Universal and Warner Bros. revealed the start of the Digital Cinema Distribution Coalition during last year’s CinemaCon. Other big companies like Disney, Lionsgate and Paramount have joined the coalition as well, while Fox and Sony are currently in negotiations to get involved.

DCDC is known as a network of satellites that can distribute feature, pre-show, promotional and live content using digital distribution technologies. By implementing this technology, it would remove the need for physical discs that are still shipped to digital-capable theaters, a standard practice since the dawn of conversion wave in 2007.

Technology Convergence Partners CEO and chairman Randolph Blotky said that DCDC’s business model will “assure long-term consistent low-cost pricing to content providers and exhibitors across the industry.” The model is based on an important partnership between studios and exhibitors, and also marks the first time that three of the biggest U.S exhibitors have collaborated since DCIP was founded.

DCDC’s plan is initially scheduled to be completed before the end of 2013. Deluxe/EchoStar LLC will provide support for the operations of DCDC network.
