If you’re planning on earning money through the Internet, and yet you don’t have the resources to go big like some deal sites and online shopping portals, then you can always start small through what we call, affiliate marketing. Basically, affiliate marketing is a marketing practice where websites drive traffic to other websites. In layman’s term, affiliate marketing is when a smaller website drives traffic to a larger, more popular one and earns money in the process. How do they get paid? Well, there are many compensation methods which include revenue sharing, Pay Per Sale (PPS), Cost Per Action (CPA), or Cost Per Click (CPC).

Affiliate marketing is a form of online marketing that overlaps with other Internet marketing methods which may include display advertising, search engine optimization, email marketing campaigns and outsourced content development like blogs and articles. If you’re planning to enter affiliate marketing, it’s best to understand that there are four key players in this particular industry: the merchant (the owner of the website your driving traffic into), the network, the publisher (affiliate marketer) and the customer.

Many merchants prefer affiliate marketing because of the “pay per performance” concept which focuses on getting results first before any marketing expense is considered. In other words, when it comes to affiliate marketing, you only pay when you get results. This concept of giving incentives only when you get the results is the core of an efficient and effective affiliate marketing. Getting individuals and companies to advocate your site and increase online exposure is a solid marketing tool often overlooked by advertisers. Examples of sites practicing affiliate marketing include coupon and rebate websites, weblogs, email list affiliates as well as content and niche market websites.

Unlike the use of traditional advertising channels, affiliate marketing generates contacts and networks that are extremely valuable because they are derived from domains. Simple text links used in affiliate marketing can already help boost traffic to your website. This is especially helpful when you’re selling products and services because if your website can be found in more place or affiliate channels, chances are you’d have more customers dropping by your page. Simple.

Affiliate marketing definitely plays a vital role in the world of electronic retail. This method of rewarding affiliates to build more traffic and create a solid web presence is invaluable and can seep through channels which usually cannot be reached by traditional methods of advertising. File-sharing services, retail industries as well as the adult and gambling sectors heavily rely on affiliate marketing, and soon even more industries will consider harnessing the unique online tool as part of their marketing mix.

Facebook announced some new WordPress integration today. This includes a new plugin called Facebook for WordPress. It comes with “social publishing features” and the following widgets (as listed on Facebook’s developer blog) which have been around for some time:

  • Activity Feed: Shows readers their friends’ activity on the site, such as likes and comments.
  • Recommendations: Gives readers personalized suggestions for pages on your site they might like, as well as a Recommendations Bar option to give users the option to add content to their Timeline as they read.
  • Customizable Like, Subscribe and Send buttons
  • Comments Box: Makes it easy for people to comment on your site and post back to Facebook, and includes moderation tools. The plugin also features automatic SEO support for Facebook Comments, so search engines can index them to improve your site’s visibility.

Google penalizes sites that directly sell or buy links, but accomplices like link brokers and sites that run “Buy Links” ads are left unpunished while they enjoy their big commissions.

Such websites would not buy or sell links on their account for fear of Google ban, yet they yield to the monetary incentives of running link trade ads. These websites are confident that their Internet search ranking won’t be affected by running such ads, and they are correct.

But is it totally safe to turn your website into a link trade accomplice?

There’s been a great deal of talk about the Google Penguin update since it launched last month, and a lot of webmasters are still trying to sift through the rubble and determine if their sites were even impacted by Penguin or some other Google algorithm change. In addition to Penguin, there were two Panda refreshes last month, and over 50 other changes, which Google finally listed on Friday.

SEOmoz CEO Rand Fishkin tells WebProNews, “It’s done a nice job of waking up a lot of folks who never thought Google would take this type of aggressive, anti-manipulative action, but I think the execution’s actually somewhat less high quality than what Google usually rolls out (lots of search results that look very strange or clearly got worse, and plenty of sites that probably shouldn’t have been hit).”

Marketing automation leader Pardot has upgraded its software to include new search engine optimization (SEO) tools for small business marketers. The cloud-based system now includes features for monitoring of keywords and competitors. The data, compiled from multiple sources, is available to marketers from a dashboard within the Pardot system. The new SEO tools — which are free to Pardot users — pair with Pardot’s other market reports to provide a one-stop portal for tracking and improving multi-channel marketing.

Google traditionally uses the date of creation or modification of documents when ranking search results. For instance, the date of creation tells Google the pace of link growth and how soon domains change server location and registrar accounts. These indicators are used to detect signs of spamming. Google also looks at the inception date of a document when processing search queries about breaking news in order to give priority to newly written blog posts and news articles. As Google simply puts it, old and newly created documents “may be more favorable” than the other. The question is when.

There has been a lot of talk about Google’s algorithm changes recently, and it seems most of it has leaned toward the negative. Nobody likes change (especially me with my OCD tendencies), but I think algorithm changes are a positive.

The job of the search engines: There is one main job for search engines, and that is to provide the most relevant content possible for their users. Despite Google’s 14 years of advancing its search algorithms, search queries remain anything but perfect. You can still search for shoes and get blenders, and although it will never be perfect, advancements in technology are increasing the odds of your search queries getting more accurate. The more accurate a search engine is versus the competition, the more market share it will attract.

How do you deal with changes? You worry less about what they are changing and worry more about “why” they are changing, and that is to increase search success.

Here are five things you can focus on to help your SEO results improve now and in the future.
